TIPS
Cleared for takeoff contracts with The Sharp Advantage -aviation career consultants. They provide free resume review and mock interviews to pilots with less than 750 hours or anyone in the active-duty military.
Tips - What to wear to an interview
- A black suit or a dark shade of blue/grey • Ironed white shirt
- Conservative tie with a Windsor knot. No bowtie and no bright colors or anything outlandish.
- Highly polished black shoes
- A black belt to match the color of the suit
- Cleanly shaven or very neatly trimmed facial hair
- If you are wearing a watch, it needs to be conservative.
- A conservative hair cut, trimmed within the last few days
- A nice case or folder to carry your documents and licenses
- Cover any visible tattoos
- Males should remove any piercings
- Females should have one pair of conservative studs in each ear.
If you are a female, I think your hair should be pulled back. There is lots of discussion on this. But I vote for if your hair is longer than shoulder length, it should be pulled back, in a braid or a bun.
Don’t wear anything that stands out; think uniform. And for goodness sake, have clean fingernails, and do not wear cologne or perfume.
Tips for your Scholarship Essay
Before you write your essay, do a brain dump. Sit down and write down everything that makes you you. This includes things like:
- What or who inspired you
- Languages you speak
- Sports
- Instruments
- Hobbies
- Volunteer work
- Working summers or after school to pay for your flight hours
When reviewing applications, a boilerplate essay can be spotted right away and will turn the reader off. Make it personalized and passionate about why you are the best candidate.
WHY you need this scholarship and WHAT it will mean to your future.
Now is the time to toot your own horn. But don’t get too overzealous. Tell the truth, Don’t say something that you are not just because it makes you look good. You need specifics to back these claims up.

Write out your first draft out, sleep on it, and then reread it. There's no such thing as too much editing or proofreading. This is where starting early will help a lot.
